The Linn Botanic Garden
An idiosyncratic oasis on Scotland’s West Coast
An ongoing restoration project…
We bought The Linn at the very start of 2021, and have been renovating it ever since. We have poured vast amounts of time, energy and investment into the project and are nearly ready to reopen. It will still be very much a work in progress, so please temper your expectations accordingly, but we want people to see the work and dedication that is going into the restoration project, and start to imagine what the future might hold for the garden.
A little bit of history…
Building the Garden
The Taggart Family bought The Linn in 1970. Jim Taggart’s mother started the garden in its current form, until the project became Jim’s, aided by his sons Peter and then Jamie, the latter of whom became the driving force of the place as time went on.
Under the Taggarts’ stewardship, The Linn became a fully-accredited botanical garden.
Years of Neglect
Jamie Taggart died on a plant-hunting expedition to Vietnam in 2013. It took nearly two years to find his body, and between the energy needed for the search, the grief of loss, and his own old age, Jim was never able to focus on the garden in the same way.
He himself died in 2019, and the garden fell into disrepair. The site went through a series of owners in a very short space of time, all of whom were forced to sell it on, as the scale of the necessary work became evident.
Current Restoration Project
We bought The Linn in 2021 after eight years of neglect and nearly three years of outright abandonment. We have been renovating the house ever since, and should be moving in soon.
The garden work is going to take a lot longer, but we have been able to open up large parts of the garden for visitors, to come and see the ongoing work.

I understand this bit of the site strongly implies that we are organised enough to have a mailing list. This is all lies, I’m afraid. But I think it would be a good idea, so I’m leaving this here in case I want to add one in future.
